Vision of CheapAI

Hi, I'm Jopa, a student and creator of CheapAI. In short, it's a BYOK (bring your own key) application (explanation below in the video). There are already many such applications, why now this one?

Free BYOK applications are either completely useless or complicated to set up, maintain up-to-date, and use. Paid ones are satisfactory, but too expensive!

I wanted to fill that gap, to have an extremely cheap tool with powerful features and very easy to use. That's how CheapAI was created!

Currently it's free, but it won't be forever. However, I will make sure that the price is extremely low: it seems to me that around €1 per user will be enough!

How CheapAI works?

Through your API keys, CheapAI will send messages to AI models, and each model provider will charge you directly. For example, OpenAI will charge you $0.006 per message for a conversation with the GPT-4o model. Some providers will require you to deposit money in advance on their platforms (you choose how much).

For this to work, you need to create API accounts on AI model provider platforms (OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic) and download API keys from them. Don't worry, it's explained in the application how!

What are API keys and what does CheapAI do with them?
Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic are AI model providers, which you can use through their applications or through API accounts. API keys are passwords that allow the CheapAI application to communicate with API accounts.
CheapAI sends messages to AI models directly from the web browser through your API account on the platforms of those providers, using your API keys.
The only exception is sending messages to AI models provided by Anthropic. Communication must take place through the CheapAI proxy server, due to technical limitations set by Anthropic, but API keys and other sensitive information are not stored on that server.
Is it all safe? Where are API keys stored?
API keys are stored exclusively locally in this web browser, not on your user account. They are protected by a certain level of encryption. Once saved, API keys can no longer be opened and viewed within the CheapAI application, they can only be deleted. All this ensures that your API keys should be safe even if someone unauthorized accesses your device or user account.
API keys can only be used to communicate with AI models, they cannot be used to withdraw your money.
How do I pay? Do I need to take a premium subscription on chatgpt.com and similar applications?
You don't have to take a premium subscription. On each of the provider platforms (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic), you have your API account. You need to deposit money into that API account (as much as you want). The provider will charge you a small amount for each message that CheapAI sends to an AI model.
Each provider charges messages sent through the API account directly to you. CheapAI is not involved in charging messages, it only displays an estimate of the price.
